Summer holidays, for the most part, consist of a comfortable lifestyle, nice hotels and going out for meals in fancy restaurants. For us, we couldn’t be further from the case.
Danny O’Brien, Kevin O’Kearney White and I decided to wander off from Dublin and do the Mongol Rally. Just to make it more of a challenge we brought a stylish Ford Fiesta that’s been on the road since the year 2000 and cost just €700.
Believe it or not, this is an annual event and hundreds participate. It began in 2004 with just 6 teams and only 4 getting to the finish line. This year there were talks of over 300 teams signed up for what is nothing short of the difficult task.
There are just 3 simple rules required for the rally
- Your car must be a 1.2L engine limit
- All rally teams are completely unsupported for the entire journey
- Each team must raise £1000 for charity in our case we are raising money for both Lauralynn and Cool Earth
In total, we hoped to get to 22 countries and the trip is expected to be over 10,000 miles. This Trip Turned into 29 countries visited and included a wild drive back from Mongolia to Dublin through countries like Russia, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania lasting over 9 weeks and changing my perception on what travelling the world really means!
